Nelson Burdette Bailey (* 20. Juli 1874 in Gustavus, Trumbull, Ohio; † 9. Juli 1948 in Sonoma, Kalifornien[1]) war ein US-amerikanischer Arrangeur und Musikpädagoge. Er wirkte in den 1910er-Jahren in San Francisco als Autor und veröffentlichte mehrere einflussreiche Werke zur Ukulele (u. a. eine Selbstlernmethode ab 1914) sowie ein Lehrwerk zur Hawaiian-Guitar (1916).

Da einige wenige Punkte noch nicht in ausreichender Qualitat vorliegen kommt noch eine weitere Veröffentlichung.

Leben und Tätigkeit

Bailey wurde in zeitgenössischen Quellen vor allem als Arrangeur und Lehrbuchautor geführt. Über ihn selbst ist öffentlich nicht viel überliefert; im Wesentlichen lebte er 1917 in Verbindung mit seinem Arbeitsverhältnis bei Sherman, Clay & Co in San Franzisco in der 1301 Page Street[2] und 1919 ebenfalls auf Grund eines Arbeitsverhältnisses für Sherman, Clay & Co in 1720 Broadway.[3]. Er war seit dem 31. August 1904 mit Adda G. Mentzer verheiratet.[1]ref und von 06.11.1921 bis zu seinem Tod mit Clara Maud Burell verheiratet

Seine frühe Selbstlern-Methode A Practical Method for Self-Instruction on the Ukulele (and Banjo-Ukulele) erschien 1914 bei Sherman, Clay & Co.[4] und wurde vielfach aufgelegt. Zeitgenössische Fachpresse warb 1916 mit „Only self-instructor published. Over 100,000 sold“.[5]

Die musikhistorische Standarddarstellung von Tranquada/King verzeichnet ihn mit mehreren Ausgaben bei Sherman, Clay & Co, darunter The Ukulele as a Solo Instrument (1916; C- und D-Stimmung) und die Sammlung Songs from Aloha Land (1916).[6]

Neuere Forschung verortet Bailey zusammen mit Will D. Moyer als Autor der beiden populärsten frühen Festland-Methoden („The two most popular early methods...“).[8]

Nelson Burdette Bailey (1874–1948) and the Emergence of Mainland Ukulele Pedagogy

Abstract

 

This study presents the first comprehensive biographical and bibliographical investigation of Nelson Burdette Bailey (1874–1948), a mainland-based ukulele teacher, author, and music publisher affiliate active in the United States during the early twentieth century. While previous scholarship on ukulele history has focused primarily on Hawaiian contexts and performers, Bailey represents an overlooked figure in the early dissemination of ukulele pedagogy on the American mainland, particularly in the Midwest and on the West Coast.

Drawing exclusively on primary archival sources—including U.S. census records, copyright registrations, contemporary newspapers, trade directories, and publisher catalogues—this research reconstructs Bailey’s life, professional activities, and published output. Particular attention is given to his association with Sherman, Clay & Co., one of the most influential American music publishers of the period, and to his role in adapting the ukulele for non-Hawaiian teaching environments and audiences.

Rather than proposing speculative interpretations, the study aims to establish a documented factual framework for Bailey’s activities, situating his work within the broader development of early twentieth-century ukulele instruction literature. The findings contribute to a more differentiated understanding of the mainland–Hawaiian exchange in ukulele history and highlight the importance of print culture and pedagogy in the instrument’s early popularization.

This research is intended as a reference for scholars, historians, and archivists working on ukulele history, American popular music, and early twentieth-century music education, and seeks to integrate Nelson Burdette Bailey into the established historiography of the ukulele.

 

Nelson Burdette Bailey (aktiv mindestens 1914–1944) war Musikpädagoge, Arrangeur und Herausgeber in San Francisco. Unter dem Verlagshaus Sherman, Clay & Co. veröffentlichte er frühe und weit verbreitete Lehrwerke für Ukulele sowie Material zur Hawaiian Guitar. Er selbst hat auch mehrere stücke komponiert.

 

Nelson Burdette Bailey (active at least 1914–1944) was a music educator, arranger, and publisher in San Francisco. Under the publishing house Sherman, Clay & Co., he published early and widely used instructional works for ukulele as well as material for Hawaiian guitar. He also composed several pieces himself.
